ADHD and Non Verbal Learning Disability

by Kmom

I’m writing in hopes that someone will comment on children with Non Verbal Learning Disabilities.  My daughter has been diagnosed as ADHD and NLD.  I’ve read the information on NLD, but am curious as to how others are handling this particular challenge, especially in regards to school work.

My son is 12 and has NLD. We recently removed him from his third school, and are now homeschooling. His challenges are both social and academic, but the social thing in middle school was just too brutal. I find that he needs the quiet of home and the focus of one on one learning. I let him lead the process as much as possible, and I try to link learning to his current interests whenever possible. I also try to incorporate social learning by taking him with me on errands etc. and finding as many social learning opportunities as possible. We have some very frank discussions about social norms and customs. All in all, he’s a bit lonely and he wishes that “real school” had worked for him, but he’s doing okay. We hope that we’ll be able to enroll him in high school in a year. Perhaps his peers will have matured and developed some empathy for kids with learning differences. Hope some of this info helps. Good luck to you and your daughter.

My 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with NVLD in March this year. When I did some follow up reading/research it all “ticked” so many boxes. They all described my daughter to a tee. I have changed her to a smaller school and I try to be proactive in making sure the school understands NVLD and what it means for my daughter.
She is an absolute gem and a wonderful kid however it’s just plain “hardwork” sometimes just getting through the day to day things such as homework.
I approached the school and asked them to modify her homework.

My 9 year old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD and NLD, along with a combination depression/anxiety mood disorder. He attends public school where they are very supportive of his needs, even though we are only beginning to discern what these needs are. He is socially awkward and has few male friends his own age and this is a large concern of mine as he does express sadness about being lonely and a desire to have more friends. Any suggestions anyone has on how to help him make friends would be appreciated. I have tried making play dates for him and while they seem to go well at our house, the invitation is not reciprocated.
